Keep Michigan's Waters in Michigan

Background

Water is what makes Michigan a great place to live. Michigan’s waterways are our greatest natural resource. We depend on this water for our way of life. But unlike other Great Lakes states, Michigan does not have laws protecting our water from irresponsible use. Large corporations, like mining and water bottling companies, are using this water “free for all” to treat our Great Lakes as their own, even sending Great Lakes waters to other states and far off places.

For healthy families and a high quality of life, we need to protect this precious resource. For years, special interests and partisanship have thwarted efforts to regulate water use. Fortunately, our legislators in Lansing have gotten the message that Michigan’s water use “free-for-all” is bad for citizens and our waterways. They are writing laws to protect Michigan’s water, but they are also being pressured by special interests to pass weak legislation that will not adequately protect our waterways.

Please e-mail your lawmakers and ask them to act this fall to support comprehensive water use laws as outlined in the Great Lakes, Great Michigan campaign platform.

Support the Great Lakes, Great Michigan amendments

Dear Representative,

Please support the following Great Lakes, Great Michigan amendments to strengthen the proposed water use laws. The amendments will ensure the protection of the interests of citizens and natural resources, and keep Michigan's water in Michigan:

1) Protect against diversions by requiring legislative approval for diversions outside of the Great Lakes basin,
2) Protect all of our natural resources from later use impacts by expanding protections to include private property and habitats without fish populations, and
3) Ensure water conservation by requiring water users to self-certify that they are following generally accepted water management practices.

Sincerely,

Your name and address here
