Encourage the Governor to Adequately Fund the New Department
You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the
directions at the bottom.

The New Department of Natural Resources and Environment
In 1995, Governor John Engler split the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) into two departments, the DNR and the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Since that time, funding has plummeted for both departments, and Michigan's natural resources have payed the price. In October of 2009, Governor Granholm issued an executive order to recombine the departments as part of the ongoing effort to streamline state government. This move provides an opportunity to create a cutting edge department that can set a nationwide example for ecosystem management, but in order for that to happen, certain basic principles must be adhered to.

The New Department of Natural Resources and Environment Dear Governor,
The recombination of the Departments of Natural Resources and Environmental Quality provides a wonderful opportunity for Michigan to reclaim its status as a leader in environmental protection and ecosystem management.
However, fundamental funding problems for environmental protection still exist, and the department must be based on certain principles in order to successfully protect our natural resources and public health.
Please ensure that the new department focuses on: -transparency and public accountability in all major decisions such as permitting that affect our natural resources and public health. -a holistic approach to environmental protection involving sustainability principles and ecosystem management and restoration. -a revitalization of the polluter pay principle, and strict adherence to environmental justice principles to protect the most vulnerable citizens of our state from environmental hazards.
In addition, please ensure that the new director of this department makes protecting natural resources and public health their first and foremost priority.
It is critical that this new department exists solely to protect, maintain, and restore Michigan's natural resources. Your name and address here
