Issue

The Children's Safe Products Act

Background

In May of 2009, the Michigan House of Representative passed the Children's Safe Products Act that would require manufacturers to disclose any toxic substances they use in the making of children's products. Such chemicals of concern include mercury, lead, arsenic, bromine, and cadmium. These manufacturers would still be allowed to use these dangerous substances in their products, however, this legislation gives parents the right to know what is in the products they purchase for their kids.

The legislation is now sitting in the Senate Health Policy Committee awaiting a hearing.

Pass the Children's Safe Product Act

Dear Senator George,

The Michigan House of Representatives passed the Children's Safe Product Act in 2009, and it is time for the state Senate to act.

This legislation is critical to the protection of Michigan's children, and would give parents a right to know if they are exposing their children to unnecessary risk when purchasing toys and other children's products.

This legislation does not ban or prohibit anything, rather, it requires manufacturer's to provide full disclosure of the substances they use in their products.

Please urge Senator Tom George and the Senate Health Policy Committee to hold a hearing on this bill. The children and parents of Michigan deserve it.
