Gov. Snyder Vetoes HB 4326

Background

On December 1st, Governor Snyder announced his veto on House Bill 4326, which would have removed Michigan's ability to give unique protections to our Great Lakes.

Governor Snyder heard the voices of Michigan citizens who called on him to veto this bad bill.

If signed into law, HB 4326 would have restricted the ability of the Governor to protect the Great Lakes through limiting the authority of the administration to propose rules more protective than federal minimum requirements.

This would have meant that the people who feel a stewardship responsibility over one of the world's most important freshwater resources would have limited capability to protect it. That stewardship is a joint responsibility of whoever occupies the Office of Governor, the Legislature, and the people of Michigan.

Now, we need to thank Governor Snyder for listening to Michigan citizens and doing the right thing.

Dear Governor Snyder,

Thank you for making your first veto a bold action that will preserve your ability to protect the Great Lakes and retain Michigan's ability to serve as responsible stewards of 20% of the world's fresh water.

Thank you, also, for reinforcing your campaign commitment to the Great Lakes and standing up to the Legislature's attempts to handcuff Michigan's right to set the appropriate standards for our most valuable resource as opposed to the bare minimums set by the federal government.

As the Legislature continues to pass haphazard legislation that endangers the Pure Michigan of which I am so proud, I hope you will continue to hold them to a higher standard of protections for our natural resources. Our Great Lakes, our forests, rivers, and lands were a central theme of your campaign for governor. I look forward to following your actions on these vital issues and continuing to correspond with you on future important issues.

Thank you again for vetoing this dangerous bill. I firmly believe that your decision will be validated time and again in the future.
