Take Action: Don't Let the Legislature Erode Sand Dune Protections

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

SB 1130

Background

The State of Michigan designates its highest and most iconic sand dunes as "Critical Sand Dunes." They account for roughly 70,000 of the 250,000 total acres of sand dunes in Michigan. They draw tourists from around the world, and Sleeping Bear Dunes was even named "The Most Beautiful Place in America" last year.

Sand dunes, however, are vulnerable. They require and deserve the protection afforded them in the current law. SB 1130 changes the purpose of the law from preserving sand dunes from environmental harm for the benefit of present and future generations to facilitating development on the dunes.

Specifically, It limits local zoning control and makes it harder to request a hearing on proposed development, eliminates review of whether a project is in the public interest or if a project's environmental impact can be minimized, allows unregulated impervious surfaces by requiring approval of all driveway permits to existing structures, and prohibits local governments from requiring an environmental impact statement, except for special uses.

Critical sand dunes are rare, vulnerable, and iconic natural resources. Development within them should only occur when the protection of the environment and ecology of critical dunes is assured for present and future generations.

SB 1130 has already passed the Senate and is being considered by the House Natural Resources committee. Please tell them not to erode Michigan's critical sand dune protections!

Please Vote NO on SB 1130 and HB 5647!

Dear Representative Rogers,

Michigan's sand dunes are a rare world-renowned resource, promoting tourism, recreation, and state identity. They are a fragile resource, though, and require protection to preserve them for current and future generations

SB 1130 would weaken protections for critical sand dunes, which are the highest and most iconic sand dunes in the state. The bill would change the purpose of the law from preserving sand dunes from environmental harm for the benefit of present and future generations to facilitating development on the dunes.

Sand dunes - especially critical sand dunes - are iconic, world-renowned resources unique to our state. They deserve the best protection we can give them, not the least. Please vote no on SB 1130 and HB 5647!
